‘The Ugly Stepsister’ wins the award for best film at Sitges 2025 and is confirmed as one of the surprises of the year

A few months ago it began to sound that this year there was a horror film with a body horror theme that was going strong in its eagerness to inherit the baton of Demi Moore’s ‘The Substance’. Now, after passing through the Sitges Festival, it is confirmed: ‘The Ugly Stepsister’ has won the award for best film of Sitges 2025 and it has just been released in theaters to become one of the surprises of the year.

This movie is a reimagining of ‘Cinderella’the Disney classic’, from a most twisted and visceral perspective, since the story does not follow the popular character, but rather her stepsister, who is trying to survive in “a world where beauty is a ruthless business”. ‘The Ugly Stepsister’ is a fierce criticism of female beauty standards, in which its protagonist is willing to undergo all kinds of suffering in order to become the most beautiful in the kingdom to achieve her goals.

It has garnered quite positive reviews (on FilmAffinity it has 28 positive ratings and no negative ones), which highlights that it is “a deliciously extreme version” of the story (Variety) and that “like ‘The Substance’, it shows that horror is art” (Dread Central).

‘Together’, the next body horror of 2025

In a matter of days, October 31 (yes, on Halloween 2025) ‘Together’ arrives in theaters, another body horror film with a great look, as it focuses on toxic love, the monotony of relationships and how dangerous it can be to depend on another person to be happy.
