In the plot of Elsa & Fred: A Passionate Love, Elsa (Shirley MacLaine) is an elderly woman who lives alone. One day, she gets a shave while leaving her car and ends up breaking the headlights of her car. Lydia (Marcia Gay Harden), his new neighbor’s daughter, Fred (Christopher Plummer). Outraged by what happened, Lydia demands that Elsa pay for the repairs.

Elsa’s son agrees to pay for the damage, but upon giving Fred the check, the elderly woman manages to convince him to refuse the money by sharing a touching story.

Over time, Elsa and Fred grow closer, despite their opposing personalities: she is extroverted and full of life, while he is grumpy and prefers the tranquility of home.

Remake of a hit

Today’s Afternoon Session film is, in fact, a remake of a 2005 Spanish-Argentine production with the same name: Elsa & Fred – A Passionate Love. At the time, the film was a huge box office success in Argentina.

However, Christopher Plummer doesn’t like to define the work as a remake, nor the word itself. According to the actor, “Shirley, Michael and I completely rewrote it. So I prefer to think of it as an English version”.Huh?

Farewell to a star

The film was the last appearance of George Segal, interpreter of Johnin cinemas. However, the actor continued acting in the series The Goldbergs until his death. Segal passed away on March 23, 2021, at age 87, due to complications from heart bypass surgery.

Reference to a classic

The scene in which Shirley MacLaine and Christopher Plummer enter the Trevi Fountain, in Rome, was filmed in black and white as a homage to the famous sequence in the classic The Sweet Life (1960), in which Marcello Mastroianni and Anita Ekberg bathe in the same place.
