While it costs R$440,000 here in the USA, the $35,000 Chevrolet Equinox EV becomes Ford’s nightmare

The North American electric car market is still largely dominated by Tesla.

But even so, Chevrolet has been gaining ground rapidly, driven mainly by the success of the new Equinox EV.

With a starting price below 35 thousand dollars and a range of over 500 km, the electric SUV has won over consumers who were looking for an affordable, modern option with good road capacity.

In the first five months of 2025, Chevrolet sold more than 37 thousand electric vehicles in the United States, leaving Ford behind, which registered around 34 thousand units in the same period.

The brand’s rise to the golden tie has been driven, in large part, by demand for the Equinox EV, which alone was responsible for more than 10,000 units sold in the first quarter of the year — or almost a third of all GM electric models during this period.

This performance made General Motors claim to have consolidated its position as the second largest seller of electric vehicles in the country, with more than 62 thousand EVs delivered by the end of May.

GM took advantage of the momentum to snipe rival Fordhighlighting that the Chevrolet brand alone surpassed its competitor in sales volume of electric vehicles.

In addition to the Equinox, Chevrolet offers an increasingly robust line in the electric segment, ranging from compact SUVs to pickup trucks and luxury models.

The range includes the Blazer EV, Silverado EV, the GMC Sierra EV, the popular electric Hummer and, on the premium side, the Cadillacs Lyriq, Optiq, Vistiq and the new Escalade IQ.

Despite the good moment, some logistical challenges still hinder faster growth.

Dealers in California reported that they spent more than 30 days waiting for new Equinox EV units to arrive, which slowed down potential sales.

GM’s strategy to dominate more space in the North American market also includes Canada, where the automaker has already celebrated an important achievement: it surpassed Tesla in the first quarter of 2025 and became the largest seller of electric vehicles in the neighboring country.

However, there is still a long way to go before we actually touch Tesla in the United States.

According to data from Cox Automotive, Elon Musk’s company sold more than 128 thousand electric vehicles there in the first quarter alone — more than double the 62 thousand accumulated by GM until May.

Even so, Chevrolet’s growth trajectory in 2025 is evident.

The brand doubled its market share compared to last year, reaching around 15.5% share in the first two months of the year.

If the pace continues, the fight in the EV segment could become even fiercer in the coming months.
