The United States gets yet another electric pickup truck, and it's not just any pickup truck: in terms of refinement or power, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 shows that General Motors' GMC division didn't come to the segment to play. The Sierra is a “sister” of the Chevrolet Silverado and, like it, gained its own design in its electric version.
In addition to the practical front trunk, made possible by the absence of the traditional V-8 engine in the trunk, the Sierra EV has an opening in the rear panel of the cabin that allows the useful length of the bucket to be increased to 2.75 meters. Inside, the highlight is the 16.8-inch screen in the audio center. Amenities include heated and ventilated seats, digital dashboard, panoramic roof and Bose audio system. The Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system allows hands-free driving on more than 643,000 km of compatible roads in the United States and Canada.
Derived from the same Ultium platform as the GMC Hummer EV and Silverado EV, the Sierra EV has 4×4 traction and a 764 hp engine with an impressive torque of 108.5 m·kgf in Max Power mode, enough to accelerate from 0 to 96.5 km/h in less than 4.5 seconds. The range is up to 645 km and, with a fast charging capacity of 350 kW, the battery can gain 160 km of range in just 10 minutes.
The load capacity is modest (590 kg, less than Brazilian light pickup trucks), but the towing capacity reaches 4,300 kg. GMC also adopted the steering rear wheel system, which greatly reduces the turning diameter and allows the pickup to run diagonally with the wheels steered in the same direction. The adaptive suspension allows the ride height to be adjusted by 50 mm. The Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 starts at US$107,000 and the first deliveries are scheduled for early 2024. Later the electric pickup will have less luxurious versions.
