Daniel Guzmanwhoever was actor of one of the most famous series on television, the neighborhood comedy There is no one who lives herewhich later gave way to The one that is comingreturns to the cinemas as a performer, but also in his renowned role as a director, with The debta film where she shares a cast with such famous faces as Luis Tosar or Itziar Ituño, and an actress who was not a professional, Charo García, who died in May at the age of 92.
She plays the older woman with whom a 47-year-old man shares a house. Both fight to stay in the home in a context of fight for rights, gentrification, loneliness, evictions, and a lot of love. Common elements of the cinema that characterizes Daniel Guzmán. “The film tells how far we are capable of going for the people we love,” explains Guzmán in an interview with Frames.
"He trigger has to do with housinga right of people to develop in a home or environment that makes their lives easier. But from there a backbone is born that talks about a love story of two characters from different generations. I conceive The debt as an intergenerational love story. All the characters are looking for affection and need to get out of an environment in which they don't have everything going for them.but ultimately it is a love story. I didn't think about it when I wrote it, but lately I did. “All the characters are looking for affection,” adds the director and also the protagonist.
Guilt is another of the central elements of the work: "This film is my biggest bet at a production, visual and emotional level. It is a purely emotional film. A character who, with everything against him, tries to get ahead and his circumstances make him make wrong decisions. That is why we talk about guilt, established in our DNA through a Judeo-Christian society. Guilt castrates us, it doesn't let us improve as a person. It is restrictive.”
and rate The debt as the most ambitious film of his career so far: "It has been my biggest bet. In fact, I have gone into debt. And not only on an economic level. (…) Making this type of film no longer makes sense. You dedicate four years of your life so that it is on the billboard for a week and you don't recover anything of what you have invested. It's not worth it to me and I ask myself a lot of questions. Why am I ruined? Why do I lose relationships? Why did I stop living during that time? I have invested 17 years of my life in making three films. When time passes I recover, I forget how bad it was, another story gets into my head and I have no choice but to tell it.”
