The Ripley interpreter has finally revealed why Neill Blomkamp's film never saw the light of day despite the hype around the project.

About ten years ago Neill Blomkamp was involved in the development of Alien 5. Concept art for the film was presented, but then production fell by the wayside. Today Sigourney Weaver revealed the real reasons that led to cancellation of the sequel.

Officially 20th Century Fox, the studio involved behind the project, said it had decided to go in a different direction giving priority to Ridley Scott's prequels Prometheus e Alien: Covenant.

During a masterclass at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris, Sigourney Weaver admitted that the cancellation of Alien 5 was caused by the "possessive" Ridley Scott.

"Like many of us, I was a huge admirer of Neill Blomkamp. His film was so amazing, and I worked with him on another one called Chappie. I really enjoyed collaborating with Neill, and he had this idea to bring Ripley and Newt back to life. It was a wonderful script, and unfortunately, I think it was at that point that Ridley Scott decided to be very possessive about the series and concentrated on his prequels. I think it was a disaster for that project. We never got around to finishing it. I think Neill just gave up, and he's so talented."said the actress during the masterclass.

Alien 5? For Neill Blomkamp it was a trauma

Talk to Neill Blomkamp about Alien 5 it is not recommendable. As he remembers World of Reeltwo years ago Uproxx interviewed the director for Grand Tourismbut when the topic of Alien Blomkamp came up he ended the conversation and then abruptly ended the interview.

After the success of District 9for the South African director the road was all uphill. His later works - Elysium, Chappie e Grand Tourism - received mixed reception from critics. Who knows, he might have better luck with his next project, the announced reboot of Starship Troopers, which should enter production in 2026.
