Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and starring Wagner Moura, 'The Secret Agent' arrived in Brazilian cinemas last Thursday (6) and became a box office success. The film has already been seen for around 340 mil viewers in less than a week.
According to data from Comscore, 'The Secret Agent' sold 57,400 tickets in preview sessions and the official launch alone. Still according to the platform, in the first four days, Brazil's representative at the 2026 Oscars attracted around 280 thousand spectators.
The numbers placed the film at the top of the ranking for the biggest opening for a Brazilian film in 2025. It premiered in more than 730 cinemas, in addition to 1,400 theaters and 370 Brazilian cities, and was released simultaneously in Germany and Portugal.
The film awarded at Cannesin France, is set in the 1970s, and tells the story of Marcelo, a university professor and technology researcher who leaves São Paulo to try to live a calm life in Recife.
Arriving well into Carnival week, he soon discovers that he is being sought and sworn to death. In addition to the protagonist, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone, Isabél Zuaa and Alice Carvalho, Udo Kier, Thomás Aquino and others are part of the cast.
The Brazilian Cinema Academy selected 'The Secret Agent’ to be the representative of Brazil competing for a place in the Best International Film no Oscar 2026.
