After the worst weekend for the box office in 2025, “Predator: Badlands” faced little competition from new titles. Without taking inflation into account, the $40 million opening marked a new record for the dreadlocked alien franchise, surpassing the opening of “Alien vs. Predator” in 2004, which generated $38.3 million.

“Predator: Badlands,” written and directed by Dan Trachtenberg, grossed another $40 million overseas for Walt Disney Co.’s 20th Century Studios. A key factor for “Predator: Badlands” is that, with a budget of $105 million, it is also the most expensive “Predator” film.

“Badlands,” the eighth installment in the franchise that began in 1987 with “Predator,” offers a fresh spin on the sci-fi series. On a remote planet, a young outcast predator (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) encounters an android researcher (Elle Fanning), and the two set out on a journey. The reviews (85% on Rotten Tomatoes) have been good. Viewers gave it an “A-” CinemaScore.

Good news for movie theaters has been hard to find lately. AMC Theaters, the largest movie theater chain in the United States, on Wednesday reported a quarterly loss of $298.2 million, in part due to a less than stellar summer season. But the fall has been worse. Last month was the lowest-grossing October in almost three decades. Few award-winning films have left a big mark.

This weekend, a new wave hit theaters. But despite having many stars, most of them failed.

“Die My Love,” starring Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson, premiered with $2.8 million in 1,983 theaters. The film, directed by Lynne Ramsay, stars Lawrence as a new mother and Pattinson as her husband. Mubi reportedly shelled out $24 million for “Die My Love” after its debut at the Cannes Film Festival. Audiences rated it a “D+" CinemaScore.

“Christy,” starring Sydney Sweeney as professional boxer Christy Martin, debuted with $1.3 million in 2,011 theaters. The film, the first to be distributed by production company Black Bear Pictures, has generated awards buzz for Sweeney since its premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.
