US box office receipts, horror film Black Phone 2 in the lead – Last minute

Black Phone 2, the horror sequel that marks the return of Scott Derrickson, played by Ethan Hawke and from Universal and Blumhouse, debuts with 26.5 million dollars at the top of the rather sluggish US box office of the weekend, while the spooky season gets into full swing in view of Halloween. The film grossed $15.5 million at the international box office, for a global total of $42 million. Tron: Ares, the latest chapter of the Disney science fiction saga, after a disappointing debut raked in another 11.1 million dollars in the second week, placing itself in second place. The action film, starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee and Evan Peters, chronicles humanity’s first encounter with artificial intelligence in the real world. It has so far grossed $54.6 million in the United States and $103 million worldwide after two weekends.


This weekend’s other new release, Lionsgate’s R-rated comedy Good Fortune, the directorial debut of comedian Aziz Ansari, debuted in third place with just $6.2 million. The film, which plays on body swapping, stars Seth Rogen, Keanu Reeves and Ansari himself. Paul Thomas Anderson’s action thriller Battle After Battle, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Sean Penn, finished the weekend in fourth place with $4 million, bringing its domestic total to $61 million and global total to $162.5 million. Fifth place for the romantic comedy Roofman, starring Channing Tatum in the true story of a former soldier turned thief who escapes from prison and finds himself hiding in a toy store with $3.7 million. The film has so far generated $15.5 million and $16.4 million worldwide, respectively.
