Actor Sandro Rocha, known for the films Elite Troop (2007) e Elite Troop 2: The Enemy Is Now Someone Else (2010), caused repercussions again when he commented on his co-star Wagner Moura.
Rocha stated that Captain Nascimento’s interpreter “hides behind a spiral of silence” and accused the actor of following an ideological agenda supported by the mainstream media.
The controversy arose after Wagner Moura, in a recent interview, cited three national films that every Brazilian should watch — not including Elite Troop. The absence was criticized by Sandro Rocha, who considered the attitude a way of denying the film’s cultural impact.
“Wagner is free to choose whatever he wants. The problem is that he hides behind a spiral of silence, an attempt to steal the common sense of the population, supported by a media that presents itself as if it were true. Everyone started to be interested in Wagner’s work after Tropa de Elite, and not mentioning the most watched film in the history of national cinema has nothing to do with individual choice, but with the fact that they think the film is fascist. The culture in Brazil has been manipulated, and the left has silenced people based on fear”, he stated.
Sandro, who supports former president Jair Bolsonaro, also reported having suffered retaliation because of his political position. According to the actor, persecution within the artistic world kept him from several jobs.
“I never imagined that, within the artistic class, you couldn’t have a different opinion. I’ve always been a person who doesn’t give up my independence and my way of expressing myself, and I paid the price for that. I was removed from my profession because of my pro-Bolsonaro political position. They removed me from films in which I was already cast, and there was a persecution behind the scenes so that I wouldn’t be hired”, he declared.
The artist, who has been out of soap operas since 2017 — when he participated in Apocalypsefrom Record —, said that he currently works in the real estate market and has practically separated himself from art.
“My career was never based solely on artistic expression. I have always been a businessman and have been working since I was 13 years old. I sold ice cream and brigadeiro in my condominium to help with household expenses. I never depended 100% on my career, but today my relationship with art is zero, it is a relationship of nostalgia. My career was taken away from me because of my position”, he stated.
