The Toyota RAV4 closed 2024 as the best-selling 0 km car in the United States, taking the position from the Ford F-150 for the last 42 years. According to data released this week, the Japanese automaker registered 475,143 registrations of its SUV, an increase of 9% compared to the previous year. The North American manufacturer sold 460,915 units of its pickup truck, exactly 5% less than in 2023.

The RAV4 was launched in 2018 and has been approaching the Ford F-150 in recent years. According to Jato Dynamics global analyst, Felipe Munoz, new numbers for 2024 should be released in the next few days, but the result should be the same. The only change in the first position, according to the expert, could only happen if it includes other models from the F family, such as F-250 and F-350.

Third place in last year’s ranking went to Honda CR-V, with 402,791 registrations – the growth was an impressive 11% compared to 2023. The top 5 is closed with the Tesla Model Y (372,613) and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (344,022). The last two, however, fell by -3% and -2%, respectively.

Market grows in the USA

Overall, the United States saw about 16 million new cars sold last year. The amount represents a growth of 3% compared to 2023, being the best mark since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Among automakers, General Motors (GM) continued to lead, followed by Toyota and Ford. Fourth position was still in the hands of Hyundai-Kia, while fifth position changed – Stellantis lost to Honda.
