Toyota returned to the top of the ranking of best-selling cars in the world. Even at the end of its fifth generation, the RAV4 SUV dethroned the Tesla Model Y, last year’s champion. In total, the Japanese brand has five of the ten best-selling cars of 2024.
The data is from Jato Dynamics and was first released on the Instagram of the company’s CEO, Felipe Munoz. It took more than six months to compile all the numbers from more than 153 countries.

Despite being the world leader, the RAV4 didn’t have a break. There were 1,187,000 units sold, an increase of 11% compared to 2023. Following behind, came the Tesla Model Y, with 1,185,000. The electric SUV losing its lead is not surprising, given that consumer interest in Tesla cars has been waning. The tendency is that this year Elon Musk’s automaker will not be able to repeat the same good results as in 2023.

Bronze went to the Toyota Corolla Cross, or Frontlander, as it is called in China. It totaled 859,000 sales, but what draws attention is its 18% growth compared to 2023, the highest of the entire top 10, guaranteeing the jump from fifth place in the previous year, to third in 2024.

Showing the strength of SUVs, the RAV4’s main rival, the Honda CR-V, took fourth place. Called Breeze in China, it closed 2024 with 854,000 registrations, very close to the Corolla Cross.

In the middle of the table we have another Toyota, the Corolla. But we are only talking about the sedan, as the survey considers the hatch and station wagon versions as different cars. Thus, it totaled 697,000 units sold last year. It’s a considerable drop, of 11%, which made him lose a position in the ranking.

The first pickup on the list — you guessed it — is also from Toyota. The Hilux maintained sixth place, despite a 15% drop compared to 2023. In total, 697,000 units were sold, compared to 595,000 for eighth place, the Ford F-150. In fact, a few months ago, Munoz himself announced that the Ford pickup truck lost its historic leadership in the United States in 2024, precisely to the world leader, RAV4.
Closing the top 10 we have three other sedans. The Toyota Camry was eighth with 593,000 units. The ninth position remained with the Tesla Model 3 (560,000), and BYD, as in 2023, secured its place in the top 10 with the Qin sedan (502,000), a variant of our King sold in China.
