This suspense film is one of the best remakes in cinema history

When the idea for the film The Departed emerged in the mid-2000s, the public might have viewed the proposal with skepticism. After all, it is an adaptation of Internal Conflictsa modern classic that wasn’t even five years old when the remake was released.

But the result proved surprising: a film of intense suspense, with social depth, a stellar cast and twists that keep the viewer on the edge of their seats.

Two sides of the same game

The plot follows the battle between the Boston police and the local Irish mob, led by Frank Costello, played by Jack Nicholson. To take down the organization from within, rookie cop Billy Costigan, recently graduated from the police academy and played by Leonardo DiCaprioyou need to infiltrate the criminal group.

The narrative alternates focus between Sullivan and Costigan, and Thelma Schoonmacher’s editing work ensures that all of the story’s comings and goings make sense. William Monaghan’s script maintains tension and unpredictability until the last minute.
