They put 250 people to watch horror movies and measured their heart rates. A 2012 blockbuster turned out to be scarier than the rest

I start with a question: What is the movie that you remember having the worst time in a theater? That is, the one that left you trembling with fear or that took away your sleep in one fell swoop that night. I’m sure which one I would say: Shutter: The Photographer, a Thai technological horror thriller that I saw by mistake twenty years ago. Yours may be very different, but “science” has the answer to this question after having measured the reaction of viewers to several Hollywood commercial successes (which is why my previous feature film is left out).

For a few years now, The Science of Scare has been organized, an annual study that seeks to determine which are the scariest horror films in a scientific way. To identify them, a considerable sample of people is gathered (250 in the last edition) who must watch a selection of horror films shot in English while monitoring your heart rate following several indicators that those responsible, in collaboration with a part of the audience gathered on Reddit, find somewhat clarifying.

Sinister, the scariest movie in history?

The study mentions two key metrics: Average Heart Rate (BPM); the higher the number, the faster the audience’s heart beats (indicator of arousal and fear from the “fight or flight” reaction); and Heart Rate Variance (HRV), which measures the time between heartbeats (lower HRV indicates greater stress and progressive distress). Taking all this into account, and that each year the films at the top of the top can vary, “science” concluded a few days ago that Sinister (2012) is the moviethe scariest of all time.

Sinester

By combining both the increased heart rate (for sudden scares) and the aforementioned heart rate variation (for general distress), Sinister scores the highest overall compared to the rest of the films used for the study. In fact, in the last classification, it obtained a score of 96 out of 100, which crowns it as the most “scientifically” terrifying film, followed closely by Host (95/100)a British film that I personally have not had the pleasure (or luck) of having seen until this date. We leave you with the complete top-10 provided.

  1. Sinister (Sinister) – 96/100
  2. Host – 95/100
  3. Skinamirink – 91/100
  4. Insidious – 90/100
  5. The Conjuring (Expediente Warren) – 88/100
  6. Hereditary – 81/100
  7. Smile 2 – 79/100
  8. Smile – 78/100
  9. The Excorcism of Emily Rose (El exorcismo de Emily Rose) – 76/100
  10. Talk To Me – 75/100

What is the plot of Sinister, by Scott Derrickson?

Directed by Scott Derrickson (Dr. Strange) and available through film sales and rental services in digital format, Sinister is presented as un supernatural horror thriller where a true crime writer in low hoursEllison Oswalt (Hawke), who, seeking inspiration for his next book, moves with his family to a house where an unsolved multiple homicide occurred. Over there He coincidentally finds a box of old home movies revealing the brutal murders. and discovers that the crimes are related to a demonic entity. In short, curiosity killed the cat and our protagonist will face a great danger that threatens not only him, but his loved ones. The psychological horror feast is served.

Sinister was filmed with just a three million dollar budget and It was a resounding success of about 88 million dolars. Furthermore, apart from being able to boast of being No. 1 in this peculiar study, it is a film that was quite popular, having a 6.8/10 on IMDb and a 6/10 on FilmAffinity. That said, it must be noted that everything in the film was so terrifying that even the person herself Ethan Hawke tookor a trauma reviewing it: “The tapes had images that no one on the team recorded. I saw the recordings that we used in the movie and I couldn’t sleep that night. I swear I saw a face behind the camera in one of the scenes,” we read in statements collected by Fotogramas.

Of course, now that Halloween is approaching, I want to see Sinester. Although in truth Derrickson’s entire filmography, adventure in Marvel Studios aside, is a bit of a funk. There they are, for example, Black Phone and its sequelagain with Ethan Hawke as the protagonist. By the way, and speaking of more current movies, according to The Science of Scare, the film released this year that you will have the worst time with is Smile 2. Do you agree with that?
