It’s something that, personally, I don’t understand, but I respect, like almost everything. I am referring to those people who love to suffer, feel fear and panic. Those who have a great time with horror movies feel the adrenaline that certain situations provoke in them and have that morbid curiosity that can sometimes reach masochism. That said, as the most terrifying date of the year, Halloween, is approaching, for all those who identify with what I just said, I am going to make you a proposal for horror movies to celebrate the night of the dead as it should be.

The Substance (2024)

As Elisabeth struggles with her own alter ego and the limits of her identity, the ambition for perfection turns into a satirical nightmare. The director explores themes such as aging, beauty, ego and extreme consumption with a visceral and disturbing style. Finally, what seemed like a path to salvation becomes a descent into the monstrous, questioning how far one can go to “be better.”

With the help of a fellow gore fan, Ángela will try to reveal the authorship of the macabre video, but ends up trapped in the same nightmare she was investigating.
The film combines thriller, horror and reflection on the viewer who enjoys horror, and became director Alejandro Amenábar’s calling card. A disturbing look at the voyeurism of violent cinema and the danger of wanting to watch more than you can bear.
