‘The Dinner’, a black comedy by Manuel Gómez Pereira with a script by the brilliant Joaquín Oristrell, hits theaters on Friday, October 17
The Civil War is over. The national side emerges victorious and, therefore, the republican side is defeated. Franco, to celebrate his victory, organizes a banquet all the way. Who will be in charge of the kitchen? A red chef who, upon finishing his work, will be executed.
This is the premise of, not the drama, but the black comedy, based on a play, Dinnerthe new film by the Gómez Pereira-Oristrell combo, which has produced such good results in the past with titles such as pink sauce, Why do they call it love when they mean sex?, Word of mouth o Love seriously harms health. A comedy, also, with a luxury cast: Mario Casas, Alberto San Juan, Asier Etxeandia –the republican chef who must lead the dinner-, Eva Ugarte, the ubiquitous Antonio Resines, Elvira Mínguez, Carmen Balagué, Óscar Lasarte… A superb and choral cast at the service of the darkest and most corrosive satire, reminiscent of Berlanga’s cinema.

Two weeks after the Civil War ends, Franco requests a celebratory reception at the Palace Hotel. A young lieutenant, a meticulous maitre d’ and a group of prisoners who are expert cooks will have to prepare the banquet in record time. But Not only are they going to prepare dinner, but a more than predictable escape.
It is Mario Casas’ turn to play national lieutenant Medina and Alberto San Juan, the hotel’s maitre d’. “In the first scenes of the film you already know that the war has just ended,” says Mario Casas in the piece that we offer you as an exclusive. “You open the Palace and at night you have to prepare a dinner because Franco is coming. The viewer already wants to know how they are going to pull all this off.“. Alberto San Juan is clear:
Dinner is a film that will be very comical and very moving at the same time. It’s a comedy that happens in the middle of a drama
Manuel Gómez Pereira, for his part, defines it as “a comedy of lights and shadows, where the characters recover in a single day things that they have lost during the Civil War that lasted no less than three years.” “The process of creating each character has been very fun – continues Gómez Pereira – the relationships they have with each other… it is a very ensemble film but, still, everyone has their little story.”
It is, without a doubt, one of the star premieres of this weekend. We invite you to go see it, because a Spanish comedy backed by names of unquestionable quality is always a success.
