Sydney Sweeney suffered a concussion on the set of her latest film, Christy

Sydney Sweeney suffered a concussion while filming her latest film, Christy.

The 28-year-old actress plays real-life boxer Christy Martin in the film and has revealed that the fight scenes were “totally real” and that she suffered a serious injury while filming scenes in the ring with Naomi Graham, who played Laila Ali, Muhammad Ali’s boxing daughter.

Sweeney told The Guardian: “Yes, they were all real. Every fight you see, we’re beating each other up. I had concussions, there were some bloody noses… I loved it! The actress who played Laila Ali is a real professional boxer. She’s in the air force and fights for Team USA; she hit hard and it was very, very real. She’s the one who gave me the concussion.”

The actress added, “It was such an exciting feeling. Between takes, I was like, ‘I think I won this round!'”

Sweeney previously admitted that he could relate to Martin — who fought professionally from 1989 to 2011 and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020 — because they had both gone through similar struggles.

Accepting an award at Variety’s Power of Women event in California last month, Sweeney explained: “I’m not a fighter in the ring, but I recognize something of myself in (Christy Martin). I know what it feels like to be underestimated, to see people define you before you’ve had a chance to define yourself. I know what it feels like to have to prove that you deserve to be here, to be seen, to be taken seriously. But each of us has our own struggle, and Christy reminds us everyone that strength sometimes doesn’t come with noise, and that sometimes it’s just about getting up again and again, no matter who’s watching.

She added, “Playing (Christy) taught me that surviving isn’t the end of the story. It’s the beginning of getting it back. And to all the young women out there, I hope you know that your power is already within you. You don’t have to wait for permission to be brave. You don’t have to make yourself smaller to make others feel comfortable. And if you fall, you can get back up right away.”
