See the size of the film’s loss to Disney

Tron: Aresthe new sequel to Disney’s science fiction franchise, faces disappointing box office results in its first few weeks of release.

According to a new report from Deadlinethe film is expected to generate an estimated loss of US$132.7 million for the studio. Sources point out that the film’s budget is much higher than initially announced: previously estimated at US$170 million, the current net cost reaches around US$220 million.

The negative value takes into account a projected global revenue of US$160 million, a number considered far below expectations for a large-scale production.

Tron: Ares marks the return of the franchise after more than a decade, directed by Joachim Rønning and Jared Leto in the lead role. Despite the series’ visual ambition and cult legacy, its initial commercial performance suggests that the saga’s future may be at risk.

Everything about Tron: Ares

In the story, Ares (Jared Leto) is an advanced program created within the digital world who is sent to the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humanity’s first contact with conscious artificial intelligence.
In the human world, he finds himself divided between two opposing forces: Eve Kim (Greta Lee), a scientist who believes in the ethical use of technology, and Julian Dillinger (Evan Peters), a businessman who wants to explore Ares as a weapon and tool of power.

The narrative promises to unite the digital universe of Grid — classic scenario from the franchise — to the real world, exploring the conflict between creation and creator, technology and humanity, in an era where the boundaries between the two become increasingly blurred.

Cast and behind the scenes

The cast of Tron: Ares brings together big names in current cinema: Jared Leto plays the protagonist Ares; Greta Lee plays Eve Kim, one of the minds behind the technology that gives rise to the program; Evan Peters plays Julian Dillinger, the villain of the plot.

Jodie Turner-Smith, Gillian Anderson, Cameron Monaghan, Hasan Minhaj and Arturo Castro also join the cast.

Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn, the legendary creator of the system, marking a direct link to the previous films.

Directed by Joachim Rønning (Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, Maleficent: Mistress of Evil), with a soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Nine Inch Nails), which promise to give the film a darker and more industrial tone — in contrast to the electronic sound of the Daft Punk em Tron: Or Legacy (2010).
