Today, “Starship Troopers” is considered a cult film, even though it barely made a profit worldwide when it was released in theaters, grossing around $120 million. One reason for this is its unusual design.
If you want to experience the film for yourself with its unique mix of action, satire and practical effects: Today it’s on TV.
This is what “Starship Troopers” is about
In a militarized future, young Johnny Rico joins the mobile infantry to defend his home from a threatening alien species – the so-called “Bugs”.
As he goes through an unforgiving training system and takes part in bloody battles, Rico begins to realize how brutal the system really is. “Starship Troopers” shows the rise of an ordinary citizen to become a soldier, embedded in a dystopian society in which civil rights are tied to the military.
“Starship Troopers” would no longer be possible today
Not a video game, not a CGI thunderstorm, but real fire on the set. What seems like a filming report from days long past is actually part of the production of “Starship Troopers.”
Director Paul Verhoeven, known for works such as “RoboCop” and “Total Recall”, consciously decided against excessive computer effects. Instead, he relied on practical effects and did so with a level of effort that would hardly be conceivable today.
More than 300,000 blank cartridges were used in the shooting under the supervision of weapons coordinator Robert “Rock” Galotti. The goal: a representation of military battles that is as realistic as possible, including real smoke and authentic reactions from the actors.
CGI would have replaced this effort and would probably have been significantly cheaper and safer. But Verhoeven wanted more than just visual effects. He wanted physical presence, tangible violence and a tangible aesthetic of warwhich unfolded not only on screen but also on set.
It is obvious why Hollywood will probably never break this record again: the storage, transport and safe use of such large quantities of ammunition would hardly be possible today.
Tragic incidents such as the fatal accident on the set of “Rust”, in which a camerawoman was shot, have changed the situation. Since then, the security debate has been reignited.
Kabel Eins shows “Starship Troopers” on October 20th at 10:40 p.m. The film can be streamed on Disney+, where it is currently included in the subscription.
