Whether as a phallus fanatic in “Magnolia” or a diabolical film producer in “Tropic Thunder”, as a pimp in “Loose Business” or as an ice-cold hitman in “Collateral”: Tom Cruise shines equally in a wide variety of roles – but in the end he is often reduced to his action hero image. That doesn’t quite do the superstar justice, but it’s certainly not a coincidence.

The “Mission: Impossible” films alone attracted more than 15.74 million people to cinemas in Germany. Yes, even if they supposedly are impossible missions by super agent Ethan Hunt always somehow succeed in the end, people always wanted to see again and again what stunts that we have never seen before that Cruise and his team have come up with again. Almost 30 years after Brian De Palma’s spy classic that started it all, the spy franchise is actually coming to an end after eight films.

Considering the exorbitant production costs beyond the $300 million mark, the box office revenue of almost $600 million wasn’t exactly a reason to perhaps commission a ninth film. And that would have seemed a little forced anyway, after all, the film doesn’t have that title for nothing „Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning“ – and accordingly brings together some of the threads from the previous films. Over five months after its theatrical release, the wait is finally over today: “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” will be released on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray on October 16th!

“Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” in the home theater: More than just a good film

With 3.5 stars in the FILMSTARTS review, the almost three-hour action epic does worse than all its predecessors since “Phantom Protocol” (2011), but at the same time it still overshadows large parts of the competition. Apart from the visuals, which are once again simply breathtaking, Tom Cruise, director Christopher McQuarrie and their team have once again come up with action set pieces that make you just ask yourself: How did they do THAT?

It’s worth investing almost 170 minutes for this alone. Purchasing the home cinema version can be worth it even if you don’t end up being able to do that much with the film. Because, as one would hope for in a Hollywood production of this dimension (and is becoming increasingly rare), The steelbook is also equipped with bonus material that is extremely worth seeing and listening to.

Of the three (!) included audio commentaries, we can particularly recommend the one with Cruise and McQuarrie. With their enthusiasm on the microphone, the two of them develop a drive that goes straight to you. Why was the first act the most challenging of the entire franchise? How did you come up with the depiction of the “entity” seen in the film? And: Just six weeks before the cinema release there was still a scene that had to be filmed?! You will find out the answers to all of these questions and much, much more in the extremely exciting audio commentarywhich never gets boring and entertains from the first to the last minute – and at the end makes you see the film with different eyes.

Additionally, the set, consisting of a 4K Blu-ray and two Blu-rays, features a selection of behind-the-scenes clips that provide insight into the creation of some of the film’s most elaborate sequences, deleted footage, promo spots and more.

Steelbook in a timeless design

Even in a few years, “The Final Reckoning” will probably still be looked back on far and wide as the grand finale of a most extraordinary action film franchise – and, depending on where physical media develops by then, they may end up feeling nostalgic about the film’s disc release.

Accordingly, it only makes sense that in this case they chose not a trendy, modern design, but rather a timeless, minimalist design. Yes, one is almost inclined to say that the presentation is more reminiscent of James Bond’s missions – or better: the opening credits sequences of the 007 films.

The motif extends from the front to the back and is also reflected in the inlay – although of course it only comes into its own if you take all three discs out of the holders. The steelbook is kept in a high gloss throughout, which particularly emphasizes the red accents of the cover – and in the end will probably give some collectors hope that the previous films will now also be reissued in a comparable edition. At least “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning”, which is particularly closely linked to “The Final Reckoning”, is available in one Steelbook-Variant*which fits perfectly…
