“One of the coolest scripts ever”: Adam Driver reveals plans for failed “Star Wars” film about Kylo Ren – Kino News

There have been a lot of planned “Star Wars” projects in recent years that ultimately came to nothing. This also includes a Kylo Ren film by Oscar winner Steven Soderbergh, as actor Adam Driver has now revealed.

For the period after the controversial “Star Wars” sequel trilogy, a wide variety of plans have been made in recent years for the cinematic future of the legendary cult franchise. Much of it ultimately came to nothing. It has been known for a long time that nothing came of a new trilogy by “Star Wars 8” director Rian Johnson or projects once planned by MCU mastermind Kevin Feige and the “Game Of Thrones” makers.

Now “Star Wars” has a villain Adam Driver but even revealed another film from the star saga, which sounded particularly promising, not least given the people involved, but which ultimately didn’t come off either. Even though there was already a script!

Kylo Ren film by Steven Soderbergh

“I was always interested in doing another Star Wars movie,” Driver revealedwho played Darth Vader’s grandson Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren in “Star Wars” episodes 7 to 9, the website AP. “I’ve been talking about doing another one since 2021. (Lucasfilm boss) Kathleen (Kennedy) got in touch with me. I said: With a great director and a great story, I would be there in a heartbeat. I loved this character – and loved playing her.”

And at one point it actually looked as if something could really come of it. Driver has teamed up with none other than Oscar winner (for “Traffic”) and “Ocean’s Eleven” creator Steven Soderbergh teamed up to develop a storyhaving worked together several years earlier on the acclaimed crime farce Logan Lucky.

Soderbergh then fleshed out the story together with author Rebecca Blunt and is thus on board Kathleen KennedyLucasfilm vice president Carrie Beck and Lucasfilm chief creative officer Dave Filoni presented – who were impressed by the project. Soderbergh’s “Contagion” and “Side Effects” scribe Scott Z. Burns was then hired to write a screenplay – what Adam Driver now calls one of the coolest scripts he’s ever worked on.

“The Hunt For Ben Solo” was supposed to follow on from “Star Wars 9”.

In terms of content, the script, entitled “The Hunt For Ben Solo”, is based on the end of “Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker”, in which Kylo Ren renounced the dark side of the force and sacrificed himself for Rey (Daisy Ridley) in the fight against Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). The son of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) sHowever, he should return in “The Hunt For Ben Solo” (exactly how is unclear) to continue his path to redemption and the light side of the Force and complete this story arc.

According to Adam Driver, the “Star Wars” studio Lucasfilm was also thrilled with the finished script: “They loved the idea. They completely understood our approach and motivation.” But when it went to the executive level of Lucasfilm parent company Disney, the whole thing was put to a stop: “They said no. They couldn’t imagine how Ben Solo could still be alive. And that was the end of it,” Driver said in an interview with the project AP afterwards. And Steven Soderbergh also regretted in a statement that nothing came of the project: “I really enjoyed making the film in my head. I’m just sorry that fans won’t get to see it.”

Things are looking better for several other “Star Wars” projects, including sequels to “Star Wars 9” (including Rey’s comeback). You can find out which films and series from the galaxy far, far away are currently planned in our large overview:
