“Final Destination” not only started a long-lasting horror series, but also made people reluctant to get on a plane to this day. If you want to watch the horror cult, you can now find it with an Amazon Prime Video subscription.
“Pack your swimming trunks – we’re going on vacation!” Actually, these words should only trigger positive associations. But anyone who boarded a holiday plane in the early 2000s probably boarded the aerodynamic tin can with wobbly knees and a sinking feeling in their stomach. “Final Destination” is to blame for this. Director James Wong’s shocker about a group of young people who get out of a doomed plane at the last moment because of a vision celebrated the crash of the holiday plane with such joy that this catastrophic scene was burned into the brains of many viewers.
To this day, the escalating premonitions of a terrible tragedy are an integral part of every “Final Destination” part. And in a certain way an important indicator of quality for the fans. Even if the highway crash in “Final Destination 2” or the collapsing observation tower in “Final Destination 6: Bloodlines” took things up a notch in terms of staging, the plane crash in “Final Destination” is still a real classic.
If you would like to watch the original again – or for the first time – Amazon Prime Video is the ideal opportunity to do so. Since October 15, 2025, you can find the horror shocker in the streaming giant’s portfolio at no extra charge for Prime customers:

And that’s what “Final Destination” is all about
Alex (Devon Sawa) actually wants to set off from New York to Paris with his school class. But even before the plane takes off, he has a disturbing vision: the plane is going to crash! In a panic, he leaves the plane – and with him five classmates and the class teacher. Then the unthinkable occurs: the machine actually explodes shortly after takeoff.
While the survivors are still in shock, the next disaster soon follows. After the victims are buried, those rescued suffer fatal and rather bizarre accidents. Alex, who foresaw the catastrophe, comes under increasing suspicion. The FBI already has him in their sights. But when he realizes that death seems to follow a certain pattern, he desperately tries to forestall it…
Like a really good “X-Files” episode
“Final Destination” clearly shows that it was produced around the turn of the millennium. The hairstyles, clothes and school stereotypes are so Y2K that it’s a joy. Coupled with the mystery element of the film, the end result is directly reminiscent of an episode of “The X-Files” in a high school setting – and that idea isn’t that far-fetched. In an interview with Bloody Disgusting has screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick reveals that his first version of the “Final Destination” script grew out of an unused “X-Files” episode called “Flight 180.”
Of course, you can tell that there is still room for improvement with the forefather of the series. Later franchise entries, for example, are much more creative in the design and chaining of the Rube Goldberg death machines. And yet the first “Final Destination” shocker is still really fun – because it feels a bit like a nostalgic horror time travel. And the film is still perfect for a humorous, scary evening.
After the cinema success of “Final Destination 6: Bloodlines”, another part has already been decided. If you want to find out more about it, just click here:
