At the Mortal Kombat II panel at New York Comic Con (NYCC), screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that he is already working on the script for the third film.

“Our friends at New Line and Warner Bros. are so happy with this film”said Slater (via IGN), who wrote Mortal Kombat II. “They’re so excited, so convinced that there’s a huge fan base waiting for it, that they’ve already hired me to start writing the next film.”

The confirmation of Mortal Kombat III comes several months before the second feature hits theaters. The sequel to the 2021 film opens on May 16, 2026, after being delayed at the end of August.

Speaking about the new premiere date at NYCC, director Simon McQuoid said the film was a “victim of its own success,” something he expressed last quarter when seeing reactions to the film’s test screenings.

“Every time people watched this movie, it gained momentum,” disse McQuoid. “We created a huge box office success. We should be proud of the fact that Mortal Kombat, as a film and a franchise, will open in the summer of next year. Yes, we have to wait, but it will be a huge success. That’s why.”

Mortal Kombat II will focus on Johnny Cage, played by actor Karl Urban. We will also have other characters from the franchise, including names like Sonya (Jessica McNamee), Jade (Tati Gabrielle), Kitana (Adeline Rudolph), Jax (Mehcad Brooks), Shao Kahn (Martyn Ford), Raiden (Tadanobu Asano), Kano (Josh Lawson), Liu Kang (Ludi Lin), Sindel (Ana Thu Nguyen) and Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada).
