Michael J. Fox comments on error in classic scene that still bothers fans

Forty years after the premiere of Back to the Futurefans continue to debate a small mistake that went unnoticed by most of the public at the time. In his new autobiography, Future BoyMichael J. Fox looks behind the scenes of the 1985 classic and comments on the famous mistake involving the guitar played by Marty McFly during the school dance.

In the scene, Marty takes the stage and performs the songs “Earth Angel” and “Johnny B. Goode” after the band’s guitarist is injured. The problem is that the instrument used — a Gibson ES-345 — was only released in 1958, three years after the event that, in the film, takes place in 1955.

Fox explains in the book that the detail has been a subject of discussion among fans and collectors for decades:

“To play ‘Johnny B. Goode,’ Marty borrowed Marvin Berry’s guitar, a Gibson ES-345, released only in 1958. It’s a temporal inconsistency that guitar aficionados and fans of Back to the Future point out repeatedly,” he wrote.

The actor recognizes that the error is small, but says he is impressed by the attention of fans when revisiting the film countless times:

“It’s something that only attracts the attention of thousands of fans who analyze every detail and every peculiarity of the timeline”, jokes Fox, showing affection for the public that keeps the passion for the classic alive four decades later.

In an interview with Variety, the screenwriter said that they won’t make Back to the Future 4 because he doesn’t want to “sell the characters into prostitution”:

“People say, ‘Why don’t you do Back to the Future: Part 4?’ he said. “When they say that, they’re saying, ‘I want something that makes me feel as good as the original.’ That’s what (the Back to the Future stage play) is. That’s the feeling you’ll get here when you see this show. There is no need to drink from that fountain again. You’ve seen a lot of people come back multiple times. As I’ve said many times, the characters in Back to the Future are my family, my children. You don’t sell your children into prostitution,” he concluded.

The Back to the Future trilogy is available on Globoplay.
