“It created friction.” Michael J. Fox remembers the tensions that occurred filming Back to the Future with one of its stars

If you are a die-hard fan of Back to the Future to the point of delving into the smallest details of how the film was madeyou may know that Robert Zemeckis and Crispin Glover, director and actor in charge of giving life to George McFly respectively, did not get along very well. There were tensions and several disagreements between the two that, among other reasons, ended up causing the star not to return for the sequel. Now we have learned more about the subject Michael J. Fox and her new memoir just published.

If you look very closely at the new trailer for the reboot of Arnold Schwarzenegger's sci-fi classic, you will discover a "cameo" of the actor

“I knew Crispin Glover before Back to the Future. However, I wouldn’t say I was ready to act with him.“There’s no way to prepare for Crispin,” Fox recounts in Future Boy, later explaining, with a very specific example, how his co-star was unable to adhere to Zemeckis’s most basic guidelines. “As Crispin approached the camera, he was supposed to stay in a lane between me and the clothesline. But Crispin had a different plan. I guess I saw George as a wanderer, a free spirit who traveled in random patterns, in this case, perpendicular to the camera. (…) In the end, the team made a miniature playpen made of sandbags and tripodstrapping him to accept the parameters of the shot,” the American actor concludes on this topic.

Despite this peculiarity of Crispin, Michael J. Fox emphasizes his admiration for his co-star. “I loved working with him. His talent was unquestionable, although his methods sometimes created friction. Still, I respected how he stayed true to George (as he understood and embodied him),” he adds. Be that as it may, and as we said before, the fact that Crispin Glover was not very happy with the film and did not get along with everyone is quite common knowledge.

“What is Crispin Glover like? Unusual”

Espinof’s colleagues, in fact, remember a musical number by Thomas F. Wilson (Biff) in which he sings about the typical questions he is asked about the legendary film produced by Steven Spielberg. Between phrases like “Hey! Was it real manure? It wasn’t” or “Did skateboards really fly? It’s a movie!”, he makes a dig at Marty McFly’s father: “What’s Crispin Glover like? Unusual.” Clearly from what good old Fox says, yes it was.

However, it was not only for that reason that he did not appear in the second installment. Glover and Universal were unable to reach a contractual agreement. “We offered Crispin to come back and be part of the team, and he thought it was worth a lot more money than we cwe laughed. So it was all about money and we didn’t want to pay him as much as he wanted,” Bob Gale, screenwriter of the film, recalled a few years ago in another interview. This issue has more merit since it ended up in court. But I’ll talk to you about that another time. You can watch Back to the Future on SkyShowtime.
