His year? Mason Thames reflects on success in 2025

At 18, the actor Mason Thames Hollywood is experiencing an upswing. After debuting on the big screen with “The Black Telephone” (2022), the artist got great roles, standing out in 2025 for his leading role in the novel “If It Wasn’t For You” and in the live-action version of the hit “How to Train Your Dragon”.

In an interview with CNNto talk about the protagonist role in “The Black Telephone 2”a film released in theaters on Thursday (16), Mason Thames reflects on his successful trajectory — which is thanks to his prominence in the new horror franchise.

“This year has been absolutely insane and, you know, being a part of something like ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ and ‘If It Wasn’t You’ was a dream come true. ‘Black Phone’ is kind of where it all started, so being able to come back and bring Finney back was really an honor,” says Thames.

Even with the different projects, the artist says he would love to return to horror. “I’m a character person, so if I really love the character and feel like I have a story to tell, I’ll do it. You never know.”

In the plot, while Finn (Mason Thames), now 17, tries to deal with life after captivity, his sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), 15, starts receiving calls in her dreams through the black phone.

Together, Gwen and Finn will have to face a killer who became even more powerful after death — and more connected to them than they could ever imagine.

“I wouldn’t be here right now and I wouldn’t be doing the cool things I’m doing without Finney. He has a very special place in my heart. The fact that I can come back, four years later, see where he is and bring him to life once again is everything to me. I’m doing my best,” added the star.

The cast of “Black Telephone 2” also includes Demián Bichir (“The Nun”) as the camp supervisor, Arianna Rivas (“A Working Man”) as his niece, Miguel Mora (“The Black Phone”) as the brother of one of the villain’s victims, and Jeremy Davies (“Saving Private Ryan”), who returns as Terrence, Finn and Gwen’s father.
