GMC Sierra 2019 debuts as the first pickup to use carbon fiber

A few weeks after presenting the new generation of the Chevrolet Silverado to the public, General Motors completes the renewal of its range of full-size pickup trucks in North America with the debut of the GMC Sierra 2019. Design sister of the gold tie model, the big one arrives on the market adopting the most modern in terms of luxury and sophistication, without leaving aside its raw footprint and characteristic robust style. In this lineage there is also a particularity: the exclusive use of carbon fiber in the construction of the bucket.

As the brand explains, the component is present specifically in the ballast and sides of the cargo compartment, being 28 kg lighter compared to traditional steel and significantly more resistant in terms of corrosion. In addition to carbon fiber, the bucket features parts made from aluminum, plastic and fiberglass composite, which form a true “sandwich” of materials. Another interesting detail concerns the new lid opening, divided into two parts to facilitate use and access to cargo. In total, there are 1,784 liters of volumetric capacity.

Inside, the technological footprint sets the tone for the cabin and makes the Sierra one of the most refined pickup trucks in the segment. Materials such as leather, wood, aluminum and rubberized plastics make up the panel, while equipment such as an 8-inch multimedia center and color head-up display reinforce the technological appeal. A full suite of safety assistance systems is also available, including blind-spot warning, pedestrian detection and automatic emergency braking.

A common practice among pickup truck buyers in the USA, hitching trailers has also become easier and safer thanks to advances in technology. From now on, an application will allow the driver to remotely test the operation of the trailer’s lights, as well as access information such as electrical and tire pressure diagnostics. In addition, there will be a hitch guidance system operated by cameras and, through other cameras (now on the sides), the driver will be able to monitor the trailer’s entire behavior on the road.

Under the hood, the engine range includes three options: 5.3 and 6.2 V8 gasoline, as well as a 3.0 6-cylinder in-line diesel. In the latter two, the transmission is always automatic with 10 speeds, while in the 5.3 there is an 8-speed transmission, also automatic. Consumption and performance figures were not revealed, but given the 163 kg less and the improvement in aerodynamics and engines, expectations are positive.
