Ethan Hawke emulates Freddy Krueger in the chilling and violent ‘Black Phone 2’

Con Black Phone (2022), American director Scott Derrickson achieved great success with critics and audiences. The story, based on a short story by Joe Hill, son of Stephen King, followed a sinister guy nicknamed The raptor who kidnapped children in his van loaded with black balloons posing as a magician and then murdered them in a macabre game.

One of his victims was Finney, a boy who received calls from a black phone from other children, already deceased, who were trying to help him get out of a bunker with no apparent escape. In the end he managed to escape the clutches of that masked evil man played by actor Ethan Hawke in a worthy ending. Precisely, the performer had already collaborated in 2012 with Derrickson on Sinisterthis time in the role of a victim, in a truly terrifying film.

The film was screened today at the Sitges festival, where Derrickson left

Although Derrickson had no plans to make a sequel, Hill’s insistence made the director of films like The Exorcism of Emily Rose o Dr. Strange will join a continuation that is now set in 1982, four years after the murky events of the original story. Derrickson and screenwriter C. Robert Cargill explained that it was Joe Hill himself who gave them the idea for the sequel. “He just said, ‘The phone rings, Finney answers and it’s The Raptor calling from hell,’” Cargill said.

Black Phone 2 It premieres in Spanish cinemas on October 24 but this Friday it premiered at the Sitges festival in the Sitges Collection section. On this occasion, the proposal becomes more disturbing if possible due to the display of more violent images, with more gore, a more visceral tone and the use again of sequences shot in Super 8 to create a more distressing sensation to the recurring nightmares of Gwen, Finn’s sister. The raptor returns from hell with much more power to take revenge on the character played by an older Mason Thames and he does so through the innocent Gwen, who has disturbing visions of three children stalked by a long-haired man at a winter camp in the rocky mountains.

Like Freddy Krueger, Hawke’s character enters the girl’s dreams at night to unleash all his evil while the brothers try to find out what happened in that same camp where their mother worked in the fifties. Produced again by the Blumhouse factory, the story is not as surprising as the original, but its commitment to wilder terror and highly accomplished special effects will make it hard for more than one person to sleep a night’s sleep.
