“Disney’s Queer Predator”

The new film Predator: Badlands has won over the press and fans of the saga in general, but as in all things there has been no shortage of criticism… which, paradoxically given that we are talking about predatory aliens, has concerned woke culture.

In fact, some fans complained a lot on social media, openly expressing their disapproval of what they described like the first Predator movie “woke and Disneyfied”: This is because, overall, the story focuses on a “young boy” Yautja who teams up with two women to learn to appreciate friendship and empathy, “getting in touch with his feelings” and rejecting his people’s ruthless and aggressive way of life.

Really, the idea that Dek might be queer has been raised widely on social media in recent days, a claim that appears to have arisen from a paragraph that can be found in The Hollywood Reporter’s review of the film: “That’s the joke a friend and I made as we walked out of Dan Trachtenberg’s surprisingly tender chapter, a film that pushes the franchise’s mythology in a decidedly sweet direction. Some viewers may miss the macho brutality of past Predators, but Dek’s adventures, with his self-esteem and chosen family, may satisfy many others. This Predator is queer and we should say so!“.

Critic Richard Lawson later clarified that he was joking, but the discussion and theories have already spread on social media.
