In its first weekend of programming Tron: Ares was a major flop for Disney, and according to what was reported by The Hollywood Reporter the House of Mickey Mouse may have decided to interrupt any possible plans for the future development of the franchise.
Tron: Ares debuted with a brutal $33 million in the US – a whopping $11 million less than expected – despite Disney investing almost $200 million budget in the sci-fi sequel. Overseas audiences weren’t more invested, as the film only grossed $27 million internationally.
Per a title that should have relaunched the “Tron” brandthe result was almost catastrophic… and in fact The Hollywood Reporter, citing sources close to Disney, writes that the Tron franchise is effectively over – or, as some of the people interviewed reported, ‘he will retire’.
It should also be noted that 2010’s Tron: Legacy barely made $400 worldwide on a budget of $170 million, and this sequel starring Jared Leto arriving a full 15 years later seems to establish that the saga may no longer have an audience.
In short, we know that director Joaquim Ronning already has some ideas for Tron 4… but they will probably remain in the drawer.
