In an interview published in 2017, Diane Keatonwhich died this Saturday, 11, aged 79recalled his romantic relationships and spoke candidly about Al Pacinowith whom he maintained an on-and-off romance for 15 years.

The actress revealed that she wanted to marry the star, but said that she considered it “a blessing” that the marriage never happened.

“I didn’t even want him to ask me to marry him. I just thought that maybe he would marry me at some point. I thought, ‘Don’t even ask, let’s just get married’. But that never happened, which is a blessing for both of us,” the late actress told the British newspaper The Times. “It would have been a nightmare for him.”

Keaton and Al Pacino met behind the scenes of The Godfather (1972), and remained together on and off until 1990, when they definitively ended their romance shortly after the release of The Godfather 3. When they met in the 1970s, Diane was immediately enchanted by him.

“I was crazy about him”, she declared in 2017 to the magazine People. “Charming, funny, talked nonstop. There was an aspect of him that was like a lost orphan, like some kind of idiot, crazy and wise. Oh, and beautiful!”

The definitive end came after an ultimatum from the actress regarding marriage. When he refused to seal the union, the two broke up for good.

“We are very eccentric, he needed a woman who would take care of him, I needed a man who would take care of me. It was very important that we leave each other alone, say goodbye. But it wasn’t my choice”, he admitted, to The Times.

In addition to Al Pacino, Keaton dated other Hollywood stars, such as Woody Allen e Warren Beatty. Still, she never married. “I told myself I wanted (to get married), but I didn’t want a man I could have,” she confessed in 2014 to the magazine More. “I wanted the dream.”

She later became a mother and adopted two sons, Dexter, 29, and Duke, 25. She spoke about the decision in 2008 to Ladies’ Home Journal (via People). “I didn’t think I would ever be ready to be a mother. Motherhood wasn’t an irresistible desire, it was more of a thought I had been harboring for a while. So I dove in head first.”
