Crunchyroll begins Oscar campaign

The success of Demon Slayer: Infinite Castle in cinemas is unquestionable but, now, the Crunchyroll wants to take the film to new heights. According to the company’s CEO, the campaign has begun for the feature film to compete for Oscar.

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the streaming CEO, Rahul Purinirevealed that he was quite confident in the victory of Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle at the Oscars. Animes that won the Oscar are not exactly new to the American ceremony, as happened with Spirited Away e The Boy and the Craneboth from Studio Ghibli.

However, a shonen film has yet to win the statuette. For Purini, this does not prevent Demon Slayer to change things: “We think the film is incredible — the animation, the story, the quality in every aspect. So yes, the fans deserve the film to be considered for awards. We will do our part to ensure it receives the support it needs to be considered in every category for which it may be eligible.”said the executive.

Also called Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Infinity Castle, this will be the name of the film and it will be the first in a trilogy. The three animated films will adapt the climactic story arc of Demon Slayer to end the story that began in the anime, also using the successful manga as a base.

Infinite Castle has already premiered in some countries, including Japan, where the film Demon Slayer achieved absurdly high numbers. Approximately US$200 million has already been raised on the market, for a global total of US$240 million, which also has strong numbers in South Korea. The film will still premiere in important territories, such as Brazil and the USA.

Demon Slayer tells the story of Tanjiro Kamado, a young man who had his family murdered by Onis, a type of demonic race. His sister, Nezuko, was contaminated and became Oni. From there Tanjiro goes on a journey to find a cure for Nezuko and become a member of the demon hunter troop.

In the Infinite Castle arc, Tanjiro and other hunters go to war against the main antagonists of the saga, generating a series of intense fights until reaching the end. The original story is by author Koyoharu Gotouge, 35 years old, but who keeps details of her life discreet. Demon Slayer can be seen on Netflix and Crunchyroll, with subtitles and dubbing in Portuguese. The manga is complete in Brazil, by publisher Panini.

In Brazil, the premiere of the first film in the trilogy Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – Castelo Infinite it was on September 11th, with a partnership between Sony and Crunchyroll. The sequels do not yet have a release date.
