The electric car market in the United States has just gained a new protagonist: the Chevrolet Equinox EV.

Presented as the most affordable electric SUV with more than 500 km of autonomy in the country, the model is winning over consumers and quickly transforming Chevrolet into a dominant force in the zero-emission segment.

With a starting price of just US$34,995 (around R$190,000 at current prices), the Equinox EV saw its sales records soar in June this year, with an impressive 722% growth compared to the same month in 2024.

There were 6,239 units registered, making the model the main driver of GM’s growth in the electrical sector.

The numbers come from a survey by S&P Global Mobility and show that Chevrolet overtook Ford, taking second place in the electric vehicle market in the USA — behind only Tesla.

In the first half of 2025, GM recorded 47,506 EV registrations, a 143% jump compared to the previous year. This guaranteed the brand a 7.7% share in the segment, more than double what it had in 2024.

Meanwhile, Tesla remains in the lead, but with clear signs of wear. Sales at Elon Musk’s giant fell 7.5% in the first half, totaling 271,050 registrations.

Its market share fell from 50.5% to 43.7%. The most drastic drop came with the controversial Cybertruckwhich lost more than half of its registrations in June, falling 53% in the period.

In the same month, GM broke its all-time record for EV sales, with more than 19 thousand units sold. The Equinox EV alone accounted for 8,500 of these sales — the highest number ever recorded for an electric car in the US, outside of Tesla models.

Other highlights were the Silverado EV, which almost doubled registrations, reaching 1,035 units.

A Fordin turn, saw its sales of electric cars shrink 9.5% in June, reaching 5,759 units.

As a result, its market share fell to 6.7%, losing space to rivals like HondaAcura and Cadillac, which grew quietly. Kia, Hyundai and Rivian, on the other hand, retreated.

The success of the Equinox EV has surprised even dealers. A dealer in California said it could have sold even more units, but there were delays in the delivery of vehicles that exceeded a month’s wait.

With the $7,500 tax credit for electric cars set to end in September, GM has already begun offering aggressive discounts to keep up the fast pace of sales.

The strategy appears to be working — and the Equinox EV, which many saw as just another entry-level model, is proving to be Chevrolet’s biggest success in years.

The American market is changing rapidly, and if the pace continues, Tesla could soon have a much tighter fight for leadership.
