Even if it’s never easy to go without fail with a film, the first one Black Phone he had the story of Stephen King’s son on his side that he could rely on and the hand of one of the most intriguing horror directors of recent years. Throwing yourself into a sequel, therefore, could have wasted the effort invested in 2022 and which earned the film its acquired role as a cult object. Thanks in particular to the interpretation and physiognomic work of Ethan Hawke’s Raptor, whose mask continues to disturb the dreams not only of Gwen and her brother, but of all the spectators who were able to experience his madness during Derrickson’s first film. The most difficult part could therefore only be bringing the character back “to life”, central to the danger that lives and boils in the souls of the protagonistsin a framework that was coherent while not as realistic as possible like that of horror films.
The World in Super 8 by Scott Derrickson
What Scott Derrickson therefore does is leave space for a story which, while maintaining some fixed points within the narrative, allows itself to be overwhelmed by the suggestions it evokes, capable of transporting the public to the same margin in which the tangible and the intangible merge, using together the concrete but volatile images of Super 8. While the story proceeds with the boys’ investigation and their attempt to free themselves from the Bird of Prey forever, Derrickson uses the film to demarcate the difference between the real dimension inhabited by the characters and their imaginative version, where horror takes hold in the realm of the uncanny.
The horror digs deep into the protagonists and eviscerates the fears of the spectators, petrified and glued to their seats, unable to move due to the terror that the claws of the Raptor will grab them too. Remembering the films of his mass murders Sinisterconsidered in 2020 by the study conducted by Broadband Choices the scariest movie ever made (based on viewers’ heart rate), featuring Black Phone 2 director Scott Derrickson continues the crazy and bloody mythology of the Raptor with a dignified and disturbingly hallucinating sequelcapable of attracting and pushing away like the best horror films do.
