This is how the author of The Black Phone found “a secret door to the second film” by bringing Ethan Hawke back

THE SECRET BEHIND THE KIDNAPPER’S NEW MASK

In the trailer for The Black Telephone 2, released by Universal Pictures a month ago, the public got a glimpse of the Kidnapper’s new mask – the villain played by Hawke. Thus, during a recent interview with Collider, Derrickson told how the team responsible achieved the final aesthetic of the prop, explaining with the following words:

“The only way I know to do something like this is to try to imagine something as a starting point or find visual references, but go to a great makeup artist – like we had on this film – and kind of describe it, and then let them work with concept artists and make the art. The process of looking at art is always one of molding and refining, like, ‘I like this. I don’t like this. I like this look. I don’t like this look. Try again based on this feedback.’ until you get to something, like, ‘Aha! That’s it. Great’. Then the makeup effects department has to step in and make this work in a safe and time-efficient way.”
