Back to the Future turns 40, revival at the cinema and boom in gadgets on the saga – Free Time

It’s been exactly 40 years since a DeLorean changed the concept of time travel forever… and today, that journey continues. Back to the Future Day is celebrated on October 21st, an unmissable opportunity for all fans of the film and its incredible adventures between past, present and future. To celebrate this very special anniversary, the iconic film of the 1980s returns to cinemas, ready to excite old and new generations.
The cult saga that brought almost 200,000 people back to the cinema in Italy alone, returns to theaters in a restored 4K version on October 21st with special screenings, fan gatherings, a large exhibition-event, social surprises: Zemeckis’ cult film celebrates four decades of time travel.

Since its debut in 1985, Back to the Future has grossed nearly $400 million worldwide, generated a global phenomenon and marked the collective imagination with memorable characters, cult jokes and ingenious inventions. Marty McFly (the unfortunate Canadian actor Michael J. Fox, now 64 years old, affected for years by Parkinson’s disease), Doc Brown and their DeLorean will return to flow on the big screen for a unique event distributed by Nexo Studios, which will offer all spectators the chance to relive – or discover for the first time – the emotions of the film in the cinema.

Like every year, the most passionate fans know that October 21st is not just any date, but the date: the one in which Marty travels through time in the second chapter of the trilogy and which, since 2015, has officially become the day of international celebrations dedicated to the film. For the occasion, Nexo Studios invites all spectators to come to the theater with their own outfits inspired by the film, be it a red vest, a scientist’s coat or a pair of Nike Mags. The goal? Gather the largest group of fans in front of Italian screens, immortalize the feat with a photo to post with the hashtag #RitornoAlFuturoDay40 and share the passion for a saga that has spanned generations.

But the “Back to the Future” fever doesn’t stop at the cinema: even online the interest in the saga is more lively than ever! This is confirmed by the data from Wallapop – a leading platform in the buying and selling of second-hand products, which promotes a model of responsible and sustainable consumption – which, in the week preceding October 21st, recorded a 50% increase, compared to the previous one, on articles linked to this timeless classic.

Marty McFly’s Funko Pops dominate the ranking of the most searched objects: the figurines inspired by the characters from the film have in fact recorded a +98% boom in searches in just one week! Among the most coveted objects by users of the platform we find the DVDs of the trilogy, with an increase in searches of 32%. Evidently, many want to revisit – or collect – the adventures of Marty McFly in the most classic format ever.

The revival also involves gadgets and posters related to the film, with a respective growth of 47% and 41% in searches. A trend that demonstrates how 80s aesthetics, pop film icons and legendary quotes continue to make us dream.

For collectors, fans and beyond, it is therefore the perfect period to look for new memories to add to your collection.

Ultimately, “Back to the Future Day” reminds us that every era has its charm, and that the past can still inspire the present and, perhaps, even the future.

The exhibition event

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary, RETURN TO THE FUTURE DAY is also celebrated with the exclusive collaboration between cinemas and the exhibition-event “BACK IN TIME – THE EXHIBITION”, organized by Infinity Events in collaboration with Ritorno al Futuro Italia APS, and open until 26 October 2025 at Villa Beretta Magnaghi in Marcallo con Casone (MI). An immersive exhibition of over 2,000 m2, which brings together more than 100 original and certified production memorabilia from the Back To The Future Museum. On display: props, costumes, concept art, unpublished storyboards, iconic vehicles (including the DeLorean DMC12, Biff’s Ford, the Libyan terrorists’ Volkswagen T2 Bus and Marty’s Toyota Hilux SR5), but also reconstructed settings such as the Clock Tower, Lou’s Cafe, the “Enchantment Under the Sea” dance and much more.
