Ares, the precise numbers of the budget and the flop, a nine-figure red

Deadline investigated more thoroughly the costs and projected losses of Tron: Ares with Jared Leto, a film not so much detested by the public, but rather generally ignored. How much will the gamble cost Disney?

Deadline has unleashed its sources to understand what the actual size of the flop Of Tron: Ares. Despite a significant promotional campaign, the Disney she failed to convince the public to show up in the theater. In fact, it should be noted that this is not a flop by word of mouth, but by itself indifference: in our review below we considered it – like many – a pleasant film although not remarkableappreciating above all the music by Nine Inch Nails. But the problem is that the expense was too much higher than the interest that the mass shows for the brand. Let’s read some numbers.

Tron: Ares, 220 million budget, a red worth over 130 million, also considering marketing

Unlike what was leaked weeks ago, it seems that the budget of Tron: Ares was more than 180 million dollars, more around 220, perhaps also due to the reshoot after tweaks to the script (the name is mentioned Billy Rayuncredited). The point is that, as often happens in the case of colossalthere were $102,500,000 spent on promotion (including blocking Hollywood Boulevard for a NiN concert), 14,200,000 in legal contractual percentages, 10,800,000 in miscellaneous additional costs, for a total of 347,500,000 invested on the brand born with Tron from 1982: a franchise that seems to have aged poorly, referring to us solo to the commercial aspect, because we believe it is too current thematically. Analysts predict that, once it reaches 160 million in theaters worldwide, the film can make Disney a profit total of 214,800,000 dollars (between percentages of takings, streaming and TV rights, rentals for projection on means of transport). At the moment, however, Tron: Ares is still stuck at just over 100 million collected worldwide, so the current evaluation of the red on 130 million she is optimistic.
As often happens, behind the scenes there is one pass the buck for the flop’s responsibilities: Disney itself was hesitant in approving it, after the box office “at the limit” of Tron Legacy (2010), and some point to the choice of having concentrated too much on Jared Leto and his Ares the story, almost ignoring what was done in Legacy, as usual “soft reboot“. An anonymous agent summarized the situation for the Hollywood Reporter: “There was no specific visionto be honest. The idea that Disney should spend a quarter of a billion dollars on a movie starring Jared Leto, tied to a franchise that hasn’t worked for forty years, is delusional.” Despite a decidedly livelier 2024 than 2023 (thanks to Inside Out 2, Deadpool & Wolverine, Oceania 2, Mufasa), 2025 saw the major record big numbers just for the success of remake Of Lilo & Stitch (1,037,500,000), plus an interesting but not massive figure for Fantastic Four: Beginnings (approximately 522 million). The upcoming ones Zootropolis 2 e Avatar: Fire and Ash however, they should not reserve any nasty surprises.
