Ape horror with 88 percent positive reviews soon in cinemas: The first trailer for “Primate” – Kino News

Johannes Roberts has already made horror films with zombies, aliens and sharks, among other things. Now he lets a monkey loose on us, which is initially very cute, but soon becomes a deadly danger. The first trailer for “Primate” gives a foretaste.

“Primate” celebrated its premiere a few weeks ago at Fantastic Fest 2025 and was immediately celebrated by horror-loving audiences and critics. On the reviews collection page Rotten Tomatoes Currently 88 percent of reviews are positive. This unusually high number for a genre film is certainly due to the fact that only horror lovers reported on the Fantastic Fest and so only they rated the film. However, their expertise in particular gives hope that genre fans can look forward to the film.

We’ll know more in just a few months: “Primate” will be released in German cinemas on January 22, 2026.

This is what “Primates” is about

A seemingly harmless pet loved by everyone causes a bloody nightmare in “Primate”. After a time at college, Lucy (Johnny Sequoyah) finally returns to her family home in Hawaii – and with it comes the longed-for reunion with her pet chimpanzee Ben. But soon the playful monkey becomes unnoticed and infected with rabies and begins to change. Lucy’s party with her friends quickly takes a very bloody turn – with a particularly dangerous threat. Because Ben is very smart, after all, as a monkey, he is dangerously close to a human…

Johannes Roberts, a director who has made a name for himself in modern horror cinema in recent years, is responsible for “Primate”. Among other things, the shark film “47 Meters Down” as well as the sequel “47 Meters Down: Uncaged” and “The Strangers: Sacrificial Night” are on his CV.

From his new film we seem a kind “Whose“ can expect with chimpanzees. The first reviews praise the oppressive tension as well as the brutal and shockingly staged kills. In addition to Johnny Sequoyah, known from “Dexter: New Blood,” the cast also includes Oscar winner Troy Kotsur (award-winning for “CODA”). The well-known deaf actor plays the protagonist’s deaf father.
