Anupam Kher has expressed his grief after the passing of veteran actor-director Govardhan Asrani, fondly known as Asrani. He thanked him for making the world a better place, and also recalled the conversation they had just last week. He revealed that Asrani had expressed interest in conducting a masterclass at Kher’s acting school. Asrani passed away in Mumbai on Monday after a prolonged illness at the age of 84.
Anupam Kher Pays Tribute to Asrani
Anupam Kher took to X (formerly Twitter) to mourn the death of Asrani. In his caption, he expressed his heartbreak over the news of his death, and wrote, “Dearest #AsraniJi! Thank you for making the world a better place to be in with your persona!! On and off screen! We will miss you in physical form! But cinema and your ability to make people laugh will keep you alive for years to come! Om Shanti!” He also shared a video remembering Asrani.
Anupam Kher Recalls His Last Conversation With Asrani
“A little while ago, I came to know about Asrani ji’s departure and I was very happy. Last week I talked to her. She wanted to take a masterclass in my acting school. He is travelling. Where am I doing the main shooting? (A little while ago, I heard about Asrani ji’s passing, and my heart feels very heavy. I had spoken to him just last week. He wanted to come to my acting school to conduct a masterclass. He was traveling at the time. “He said he was shooting,” said Anupam Kher.

He added, “Many people usually know him as a great comic actor, but what many don’t know is that he was also a teacher at FTII. He taught many legendary artists.” Anupam Kher further recalled doing many Hindi and Telugu films with him in the past. In an emotional moment, Anupam Kher said that when someone passes away, all the memories with them come rushing back like a flashback.
Akshay Kumar Remembers Asrani
After hearing the news of Asrani’s death, Akshay Kumar paid an emotional tribute. On X, he wrote, “Speechless with grief at the passing of Asrani ji. We had just shared the warmest of hugs just a week back at the shoot of Haiwaan. Bahot pyare insaan the…he had the most legendary comic timing. From all my cult films Hera Pheri to Bhagam Bhag to De Dana Dan, Welcome and now our unreleased Bhoot Bangla and Haiwaan…I had worked and learned so much from him. What an absolute loss to our industry. God bless you Asrani Sir, for giving us a million reasons to laugh. Om Shanti.”
Asrani’s Family’s Statement
After his death on Monday, Asrani’s family shared a statement on his Instagram profile. It read, “Our beloved, the one who brought smiles to everyone’s faces, Asrani ji is no longer among us. His passing is an irreparable loss for both Hindi cinema and our hearts. The indelible mark he left through his performances will remain eternal. May God grant peace to his soul. Om Shanti.”
From cult comedies like Hera Pheri and De Dana Dan to iconic performances in classics like Sholay, Asrani’s comic timing and memorable screen presence left an indelible mark on Hindi cinema.
