After the Hunt: the review of Luca Guadagnino’s film

Almost impossible to talk about the present. This film, which unravels many of the questions we ask ourselves, succeeds. We are in 2019 (but the epilogue will take us to the present day), at Yale, Philosophy departmentthe place where ideas are produced.

The tension between two teachers (Roberts, magnificent alpha female, and Garfield), friends and rivals, and her favorite student occupies the stage right from the opening dinner. Class privilege, #MeToo and its consequences in the academic world (does a woman really have more career chances now as students claim?) and on society, identity anxiety: these are issues that Nora Garrett’s dense screenplay brings to the table.

But that’s not all. Guadagnino is not interested in clearing up doubts (was there a crime or not?), indeed it encourages them. Multiple truths live within us: we are complicated, at times horrifying, needlessly competitive and capable of vain acts. Lucky is he who has Michael Stuhlbarg in his life: “I love you more” is the only truth. And the composition of every conflict. Unmissable.
