The Toyota Camry’s historic reign in the sedan segment in the United States may be over. The brand’s best-selling model there, it no longer enjoys the same prestige: in 2013, its market share fell by approximately 20%, at the same time that rivals such as the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima and Ford Fusion grew.
Toyota is going to great lengths to try to keep its sedan in the lead. In July, the brand granted a series of benefits for sales to fleet owners and gave discounts to units destined for individuals. The problem is that the competition is also moving: Ford, for example, doubled production of the Fusion to meet demand for the car.
Market analysts say that the high level of quality of its competitors and the fact that the Camry is a year older than the others could lead to the possible loss of leadership. However, all experts agree that it is still too early to declare the downfall of the Toyota sedan, as it has been leading the segment for 15 years, having only lost leadership in 2001.
