Theft and theft of cars are frequent crimes in different parts of the world and which motivate advances in technology by vehicle manufacturers. However, in some cases these advances can become problems and even become a weakness in automobile safety, as is happening with the General Motors.
GM is facing a legal problem that no automaker would like to go through. A collective process that is taking place in the United States claims that some models are vulnerable to smart key signal cloning. In practice, this means that theft or theft of some models such as the Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck is easier.

The identified fault
GM’s most modern vehicles use a keyless entry system, allowing the driver to unlock and start the car just by approaching the object. This system is known as keyless.
The plaintiffs claim that these devices use commercial radio signals, and simple signal cloning equipment can intercept them. When criminals clone this signal, they can replicate it to unlock doors and start vehicle engines without triggering alarms.
This method of theft, known as Relay Attackis a problem that other brands have taken safety measures to avoid, something that, according to the class action lawsuit, GM did not do adequately.
Which GM models are at risk
Brand vehicles Chevrolet, GMC e Cadillac manufactured between 2015 and 2025 are cited in the class action. Of the various cars involved, it is possible to highlight models such as:
- Chevrolet Silverado;
- Chevrolet Tahoe;
- GMC Sierra;
- Cadillac Escalade.
Thieves often target these cars due to their high resale value and constant presence on the streets of the United States.
The action began in the state of Texas and represents vehicle owners who had their cars stolen due to these failures. In addition to compensation for damages, the group demands that the company take concrete measures to strengthen the security of the keyless system.
GM is undergoing a massive recall due to mechanical failures of these same vehicles. The brand is going through a delicate moment amid controversy. The case also reignites the debate about the efficiency of connected car security systems.
With thefts happening in less than a minute, consumers demand quick and efficient solutions from GM. It is not known whether this fault is also present in models sold in other countries since 2015.
