Back to Future Day, Robert Zemeckis’ film turns 40 and returns to the cinema

Time travel is possible and a film taught us this forty years ago. Back to the future (THE TRAILER) has forever changed the way we talk about time travel and today that journey continues. An important milestone for a film that has marked the history of cinema and is destined to continue to do so. First released in 1985, Robert Zemeckis’ masterpiece celebrates its fortieth anniversary in 2025 with a series of events, special screenings and collector’s editions dedicated to fans around the world.

The return we needed

October 21st is celebrated Back to Future Daythe international day dedicated to the saga that made entire generations dream of “roaming” back and forth in time at will. To celebrate the anniversary, the film returns to cinemas in a restored 4K version thanks to Nexo Studios, with special screenings, fan gatherings and a large exhibition event. In Italy, the cult saga has already brought almost 200,000 spectators back to theaters, ready to relive the adventures of Marty McFly and Doc Brown between past, present and future.

From October 31, 2025, the film will also be available in premium formats such as IMAX, Dolby Cinema, 4DX and D-Box, offering an immersive cinematic experience. It is not just a nostalgic operation, but a tribute to the magic of 80s cinema and one of its most recognizable icons: the DeLorean DMC-12, the most famous time machine in history. Michael J. Fox — the actor who plays Marty — confessed that he “hated every minute in it” during filming, but that didn’t stop the car from becoming legend.

Collector’s editions and the value of time

For the occasion, Universal Pictures has released new collector’s editions in Blu-ray and 4K, including the box set “Trilogy 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Gift Set“, which includes the three films of the saga, exclusive gadgets and numerous extra contents. Since 1985, Back to the future it grossed almost 400 million dollars worldwide, conquering audiences with ingenious inventions, cult jokes and unforgettable characters. His secret? The ability to adapt to the passing of time, always remaining current thanks to the perfect mix of irony, imagination and heart.

A legacy that travels through time

Directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, Back to the future has become a global cultural phenomenon. Every year, on October 21st – the date on which Marty travels through time in the second chapter of the trilogy – fans gather around the world with outfits inspired by the film: red vests, scientist coats and Nike Mag shoes with the aim of gathering the largest community of fans, sharing photos and memories with the hashtag #BackToTheFutureDay40.

In Italy, the celebrations also include the exhibition Back in Time – The Exhibitionorganized by Infinity Events in collaboration with Back to the Future Italy APSopen until 26 October 2025 at Villa Beretta Magnaghi in Marcallo con Casone (MI). An immersive journey of over 2,000 square meters that displays more than 100 original memorabilia, from costumes to unpublished storyboards, up to iconic vehicles such as the DeLorean, Biff’s Ford, the Volkswagen T2 Bus and Marty’s Toyota Hilux.

Fever from Back to the future it doesn’t stop there: the collectibles market is also growing, with a real boom in themed gadgets on second-hand platforms, from Funko Pops to special editions on DVD and Blu-ray.
