Zack Snyder had his moment in the superhero spotlight with the films with Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021).
The filmmaker also co-wrote Wonder Woman (2017), and directed Watchmen (2009), so he knows his stuff, and he has proven to have a unique perspective that most fans enjoy. While Snyder has moved on to other projects, he recently joined Instagram, and he posted a throwback photo this week for us to check out.
The never-before-seen photo is from the set of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justiceand it beautifully features Snyder’s Superman, Henry Cavilllooking seriously stoic. The post came with the note from Snyder, “Henry Cavill is Superman. From BvS shot with my monochrome 50mm Noctilux. 3 weeks on Instagram thanks to everyone.”
The post initially made me think the filmmaker was making a dig at the new Supermanplayed by David Corenswet in James Gunn’s summer blockbuster, but it sounds like Snyder has been supportive to Gunn’s new vision.
Snyder said when asked about the DCU relaunch last year, “You know, I’m a pretty open book. I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I’m down. I’m in. Let’s see what happens. I’m pretty excited. I mean, we’re going to get Superman pretty soon, so we’ll see what that’s like.”
When asked on Threads if he’d seen Snyder’s comments about being “excited for the DCU,” Gunn responded: “I didn’t, but I knew it already because he’s texted me. He’s been incredibly supportive throughout this process.”
That’s nice to hear. Snyder had a good run in the DC playground, and he is on to another phase in his career. The director has been sharing production stills from his 20-year passion project, The Last Photographwhich is currently in development. The official synopsis for the film reads:
“An ex-DEA operative must return to the mountains of South America in an effort to find his missing niece and nephew, following the brutal murders of their diplomat parents.
Enlisting the help of a washed-up junkie war photographer, the only person to have seen the face of the killers, he sets out, determined to find the children and the truth, but soon learns he must also face the ghosts of his past.
“Their journey into the unknown takes them further and further away from civilization, bringing into question everything they believe, while slowly eroding the distinction between real and surreal.”
Stay tuned for updates on the project, and check out Snyder’s post below:
