Billionaire Richard Blummer played by Guy Pearce organizes a fundraiser for cancer research, a topic that affects him closely because of his wife Anne. The latter quickly meets the protagonist and confesses that she wants to donate all her assets when she dies. That night, Lo witnesses a crazy scene: the woman in the cabin next to hers has been thrown into the water. However, no one seems to believe her. No one is missing on board, every single passenger is where they should be, so who should have fallen overboard? According to the director Simone Stone: “This is not a story with an unreliable narrator. The audience never questions whether or not this person saw what they say they saw. One simply agrees with her, takes it as a fact. It’s his fight against a conspiracy”.

The next day, Lo visits Anne but the latter dismisses her hastily. She seems like a different person from the one the day before and, after a careful, risky investigation, Lo also understands why: the woman thrown into the sea is actually Anne and the one who passes herself off as Anne is actually Carriewho he had met briefly before the murder, sort of lookalike hired by her millionaire husband to replace his wife and regain control of his fortune. “I think the debate about the patriarchal assumption that you can simply replace women, consider them superfluous, that you can get rid of them and move on, is at the heart of the film”, added the director.

What happens in the finale? Lo tries to convince Carrie to recant her position, explaining that she will never be safe with Blummer, as their relationship is based on the weight of his silence. Lo’s ex, photographer Ben, also dies while trying to help her escape to unmask the billionaire. Carrie then decides to cooperate and confirm her story. Meanwhile, Lo prevents Blummer from escaping and Anne’s fortune is donated according to his wishes. Once in the editorial office, Lo writes his version of the story: “Once Lo realizes something is going on, he doesn’t take no for an answer. He just tries. I think that’s what I really liked about the character. He’s not ashamed of it. Everyone thinks she’s crazy. She doesn’t care. Just keep fighting”, ha aggagagagagagagigunto keira knightley.
