Chuck Russelldirector of A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors (considered by many to be the most underrated film in the franchise), expressed interest in returning to the universe of Freddy Krueger and surprised by suggesting an unusual name for the iconic villain: Jim Carrey.
In an interview with the Development Hell podcast, Russell (who directed Carrey in The Mask) did not rule out the idea when the presenter suggested the name.
The director stated that Carrey “You could do almost anything if you put your heart into it” and that, for this, a new creative leap in the series would be necessary, similar to what Wes Craven did in The New Nightmare.
Russell agrees that the last version of Freddy (in the 2010 remake), played by Jackie Earle Haleyfailed by making him overly dark and removing the sadistic humor and personality “cinematic” of the character, something that Jim Carreywith his range and physical humor, could restore.
Despite Russell’s support and the availability of the original actor, Robert Englundfor an animated version, the franchise Nightmare on Elm Street continues without a new official film since the estate of Wes Craven regained the rights in 2019.
