Demián Bichir returns to horror films, this time as part of another franchise, the Black Telephone. However, more than scares and nightmares, the Mexican found in this story the perfect window to represent Mexicans far from stereotypes.
In the plot, Bichir plays Mando, the supervisor of a camp who will be one of the main support figures for the brothers Gwen and Finney. “Mando is a man of integrity, an unbreakable spirit, someone who is willing to help others with everything he has, in this case the kids. That’s how Mexicans are, I think it’s wonderful that they made the character Mexican,” said the actor during the premiere of the film in Mexico City.
Although the first part of this story became one of the favorite films of genre lovers, Bichir assures that the sequel is better, and that it not only scares, but immerses the audience in a spiral of psychological fear. “This one is better for many reasons. What caught my attention the most about the other one is that it is totally unusual, a horror that most of the time is based on sound effects and here, what is generated, is a truly beautiful film,” he added.
Black Telephone 2 hits theaters this coming October 16 and in it, the Mexican shares credits with Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke.
